The Ideal Mix: German Perfectionism with a British Sense of Humour

I undertook my first translation at the age of 14, when I decided to make my unsuspecting friends - who were just happily mooching along to the beat - appreciate the (in my opinion) brilliant lyrics of the mournful Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen.

Thus my path into foreign languages was set, and after a brief and intense flirtation with simultaneous interpreting, I eventually settled very happily into life as a technical translator.

Here is a brief overview of my career milestones so far:

• Staatl. Gepr. D&Ü, Munich (equivalent to a BA in translation and interpreting)
• Diploma in Marketing
• 2 years experience in Product Management with Bayer Diagnostik Gmbh
• 3 years experience as Marketing Communications Executive with Lotus Development GmbH
• Qualified Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)
• Passed the ITI exam in 1992
• 10 years experience as a freelance translator
• 6 years as a director of Salford Translations Ltd.

  Software: I have localised installers, drivers, device management programs, data collection & management applications, applications for mobile devices for Windows, Palm & Symbian OS, learning programs, SAP applications, training guides, instructions. Lotus Notes based application for PDAs on a number of platforms. Diagnostic, data management, and control programs for medical applications.

  Manuals, instructions, and training documentation: I have translated numerous manuals and user guides relating to software, hardware, production equipment and facilities, for medical equipment Marketing materials I have extensive experience of translating company and product brochures, websites, press releases, commercials, print adverts etc.

  My services

  I’m a very experienced Trados user. I can localise, compile, and test software and help systems (mainly using Passolo & HCW, but I also have experience with Catalyst and Visual C++, RoboHelp & other editing methods). I know my way round HTML, FrameMaker, XML & other tagged formats.

  I’m very much a team player, highly experienced and professional, and easy to work with. I can to put you in touch with a number of clients and colleagues who’ll be happy to vouch for me.
